The Greek Ministry of Culture has confirmed that the historic Diktaeon Cave (also known as Psychro Cave) will remain closed throughout the summer season of 2025, with no confirmed reopening date yet. The extended closure means thousands of travelers will need to adjust their Cretan itineraries as the ambitious restoration project continues to encounter delays.
Located in the picturesque Lasithi Plateau of eastern Crete, the mythological birthplace of Zeus has been undergoing extensive renovations since 2023 as part of a modernization initiative funded through Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Fund at almost €16 million (€15,968,714.72).
The scope and complexity of preserving this significant cultural and natural monument while improving accessibility has presented unforeseen challenges.
The comprehensive renovation includes:
- Installation of a hillside lift from Europa Square to accommodate visitors with mobility challenges
- Reinforcement of rocky slopes for safety
- Modern lighting systems to enhance visibility of natural formations
- Restoration of stone trails
- Expanded visitor facilities including new restrooms and seating areas

While the project was initially scheduled for completion by January 2025, these deadlines have since been delayed with no updated timeline currently available.
Visitors hoping to explore the cave this summer will be particularly impacted as the high season typically sees its greatest number of tourists. Tourism officials note that when the cave eventually reopens, an increase in entrance fees is expected, but the exact amount has not yet been confirmed.

Alternative Attractions in Lasithi Plateau
For travelers who had included the Diktaeon Cave in their 2025 summer plans, several alternative attractions in the Lasithi region offer memorable experiences:
Natural Wonders:
- Richtis Gorge: An approximately 3 km hiking trail culminating at Richtis Beach, featuring waterfalls and old watermills
- Sarakina Gorge: Near Mythoi village, offering dramatic rock formations and natural pools perfect for summer exploration
- Katharo Plateau: Situated at 1,150 meters altitude, this unique plateau is notable for its paleontological significance, including fossilized remains of elephants and dwarf hippos, alongside traditional farming practices that continue today
Cultural Experiences:
- Kera Kardiotisa Monastery: A historic monastery on the Dikti mountain range with Byzantine icon paintings
- Lasithi Plateau Windmills: The iconic white-sailed windmills that once numbered 10,000 across the plateau
- Traditional Villages: Tzermiado, Psychro, and Mesa Lasithi offer authentic Cretan culture, cuisine, and crafts

Tour operators have already begun adjusting their packages for the 2025 season, with many offering expanded experiences in other parts of eastern Crete, including guided tours of the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion where artifacts from the Diktaeon Cave are displayed.
Visitors are advised to check the official Hellenic Ministry of Culture website for updates on the reopening timeline as the restoration project progresses.
